Named after the opening lyrics of Handel's ravishingly beautiful Ode for St. Cecilia, the composer collaborated with England's first named Poet Laureate, John Dryden. A tribute to the power of harmony and instruments, a sequence of arias sung by Nola Richardson and Steven Soph will entrance you. Also on the program, a quartet of violinists will open the concert with a testament to collegial musical partnership. And a rare presentation of Bach's third Orchestral Suite (the one with the famous "Air on the G String") will be performed using its rarely heard original orchestration, making the lovely and lilting dances come to life with buoyant lightness.

This season, as we explore love in all its complexity through four remarkable productions on our mainstage, Opera San José is also embarking on a bold new venture: the creation of Solaris, a groundbreaking sci-fi opera about love, longing, and the limits of human understanding. Adapted from the classic novel by Stanisław Lem, this new work is being developed under the guidance of Music Director Joseph Marcheso, with music by composer Stefan Cwik and a libretto by Tony Asaro. This fall, Solaris will come to life in a workshop at the Heiman Digital Media Studio, culminating in a live studio capture of the staged reading on October 11.

Messenger in Harvey Milk // Opera Parallèle

The powerful and tragic opera celebrates Milk's enduring legacy and contributions to the nascent LGBTQ+ movement, his early life in New York and relocation to San Francisco, later becoming the first openly gay man in 1978 to be elected to public office in California. Milk served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for 11 months before being assassinated, along with then-Mayor George Moscone, at San Francisco City Hall.

In a fitting tribute to gay rights icon and activist Harvey Milk, Opera Parallèle will produce a completely new and eagerly anticipated production of Harvey Milk by composer Stewart Wallace and librettist Michael Korie. Newly revised into two acts instead of three, with new music and a tighter cast from its sprawling original Houston Grand Opera premiere in 1995 and San Francisco Opera debut in 1996, this reimagined version of Harvey Milk was originally intended for an earlier Opera Parallèle season, but was delayed by the pandemic and subsequently presented in St. Louis in 2022.

Inspired by the legendary 1980s Limelight NYC frequented by visionaries like Andy Warhol, the evening promises a convergence of creative minds, boundless imagination, and a deep appreciation for the boundary-breaking spirit that makes art such a necessity in our everyday lives.

Dance the night away with music by Juanita More! and lose yourself in the Limelight experience. Interact with roaming opera singers from Opera Parallèle, be mesmerized by roving fashion deities, groove with disco go-go dancers, and and bask in the glow of a dazzling vintage club lighting installation.

At Club Limelight, we honor artists who dare to see beyond the ordinary—visionaries who challenge, inspire, and shift perspectives. Andy Warhol’s photographs remind us of the power in the everyday, Miriam Hitchcock’s paintings and films bridge tradition and innovation, blending mediums and ideas to spark curiosity and wonder, and Ken Fulk transforms functional design into a realm of magic, proving that the objects we live with can be as evocative as the art we admire. In this spirit, re.riddle presents Tana Quincy Arcega, Summer Mei Ling Lee, and Kamran Samimi, whose works connect the human and natural worlds, illustrating how sustainability and memory create meaning. Together, these exhibitions celebrate care, resourcefulness, and the fragments—both tangible and intangible—that shape our understanding of one another, encapsulating the visionary ethos of  San Francisco Art Week.

A Baroque Christmas
Join us for a festive Baroque Christmas concert featuring works by Baroque masters Johann Sebastian Bach, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, and Georg Friedrich Händel. I Cantori is excited to bring their jubilant and rousing works to life this holiday season. Our program highlights include J.S. Bach’s Magnificat and Christmas Cantata Gloria in excelsis Deo, along with Charpentier’s exuberant Messe de Minuit pour Noël.

The dance-like rhythms and festive melodies of Charpentier’s mass will have you swaying in your seats, while Händel’s Utrecht Te Deum matches the celebratory tone with its exuberant and uplifting expressiveness. ICDC is proud to perform alongside the featured soloists from our Vocal Arts Academy accompanied by our outstanding I Cantori orchestra.

In its 11th year around the sun, also an election year, the Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers (FLACC) is focusing on “Revolution”, an uprising with a transnational solidarity approach to liberation for Palestine. FLACC is highlighting anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist artists rooted in the philosophies of the Zapatista movement and artists directly involved in social justice through their work.  Join FLACC for Community Care workshops, Co-Resistant Discussions, Ofrendas, an Art Sale for Gaza, Cuban-Palestinian food, Performances and Community.

Dancing The Art of Weeping

Woven into each evening of performances in El Grito por Thawra الثورة ,  is a projected intermedia installation by renowned, Palestinian visual artist, Mary Hazboun (AKA Mary from Bethlehem). Based in Chicago, Mary’s work highlights the nuanced traumas of women and their resistance against different forms of oppression that is manifested in the military machine, patriarchal societies, and forced migrations.  As part of the Latinx-Palestinian solidarity project, Bay Area Dance choreographers, Leila Mire, Nefertiti Altán and FLACC’s Artistic Director, Liz Duran Boubion will be setting works to the images and vocal narrations by Hazboun. Hazboun will be discussing her collaboration with the FLACC choreographers at the festival and prints will be on sale during the shows.
